Hi

I have got the fuel pump working. The engine now primes.

It still does not fire!

Yes, I have checked the plugs and they are sparking outside of the engine. I had an engine specialist here today and it seems that when they are in the engine they do not spark - he had a timing light gun connected and it would not flash when the spark plugs were fitted. When taken out, it would light up.

Ii have changed the HT leads and now when I crank the engine, it slows down once every 2 turns of the inlet/outlet cams. I think one cylinder is now firing early while the others do not fire at all.

I'm very close to giving up.

I'd say this can mean only two things, either there's a weak spark or you have a ground problem. Did you reconnect the lambda sensor? The rattling relay is also a sign of a ground problem.
I'd use a jumper cable to connect the - of the battery to the cylinder head and another one to connect to the chassis. See if that helps.

Hi

The rattling relay has stopped - that turned out to be grease on the connector behind the inlet manifold.

I'm running out of ideas but will give the jump lead a try later if I can find one.

No.

I now have the timing tool so that I can take out the engine and setup the timing again.

Unfortunately the tool is defective so I am now waiting for a replacement tool :(

Once that arrives I can not do the job for at least 2 more weeks.

I am loosing hope...

I now have another safrane though... (3rd) so I can still get out and about...

is it really necessary to remove the engine? Or do you get a kick out of it. :)

Unfortunately when trying to re-fit my power steering pipe I broke the union (screw thread).

The pipe can only be removed from the steering rack with the engine out hence I have to take it out the 2nd time. I really don't want to do it again but having done it once I am more confident about reinstalling it.

No the cambelt can be (apparently) changed with the engine in the car but you need the timing kit and the auxilary tensioner tool to remove the aux belt.

I like these engines when they work but they're a pain to fix...
